Staff Spotlight: Luis Cubas

Hello, my name Luis Cubas, also known as “Cubas.”

I first heard about RYSE in 2013 when I was a senior in high school. I started coming to RYSE as a youth member to learn about the different programs that were available. I was super interested in the photography class and eventually became a visual arts intern with the MAC department.

I’ve been officially on RYSE staff for almost a year and a half now, working as the College Access Coordinator.

I work with young people that are interested in pursuing higher education. I support them throughout the application process, including applying for financial aid and researching different programs and support systems. I help them build skills that are crucial for college and beyond, including budgeting, time management and study skills.

Something this year that was exciting to organize was the 2019 College Tour! From April 1st through the 4th, I traveled with 8 youth members to visit UCLA, CSUN, UC Riverside, USC, Cal Poly Pomona and UC Santa Barbara. During our stay, we explored different programs such as the educational opportunities program, disability resource center, first generation initiatives and more!

This year, a member that I’ve been working with was accepted to some colleges. Hearing about their experience resonated with my own experiences with the application process when I was in high school.

What I love most about my job is interacting with youth and giving back to my community.

If I had to describe RYSE in three words: Fun, Learning, and Community.

Something other staff and youth members might not know about me that I’m a big Star Wars fan! I have over 300 different figures that I’ve collected over the years.
