How are you feeling during this time of physical distancing and shelter-in-place?
Honestly, I have been very sad and—if not sad—mad. I don’t like being at home as much as I am now but I try to get over it. I don’t feel physically healthy. I’m struggling to find motivation to do anything.
What are some concerns and needs you are hearing from youth and from the community?
Some are just tired. I think we all are. Yes, we are home but I don’t ever think it’s ever a good idea to mix school with home. We have chores and obligations at home. Some are in denial of the whole situation, even parents.
We need more services like tutoring because we don’t understand our online courses. We also need help getting informed about what's happening and what we can do to prevent contracting anything and protect our families.
Which virtual programs have you been a part of at RYSE, and what has that been like?
I haven’t been able to take part in many so far because I have other things to tend to outside of RYSE, but I did video chat with RYOT, RYSE’s “Richmond Youth Organizing Team.” I think it was a pretty successful meeting. I really enjoyed connecting with others and actually talking about topics that interest me like my fellowship and workshop ideas for RYSE members.
Is there anything that you’ve found inspiring or grounding lately that you’d like to share?
I have been reading a lot more.
If you gotta cry, cry. Don’t let your emotions bottle up. Try to express what you feel as healthy as possible.
Remember to breath and drink water.
Do you have a personal wellness practice that you’d like to share?
I enjoy reading. I’ve been trying to expand my vocabulary. I’m hoping to get access to more books soon. I try to go with the flow.
