In 2019, RYSE joined the Black Census & Redistricting Hub, working with 31 other organizations to maximize participation in the upcoming Census among hard-to-count Black, Latinx, and immigrant communities. Together, we work to dispel myths and help ease fears surrounding the Census, so that young people and their families in hard-to-count regions in West Contra Costa County are counted, and so that the 2020 Census is utilized to generate civic engagement and youth power.

Why is the Census so important for youth and their families?
Every 10 years, the Census counts everyone living in the United States. It is important to count every person living in your home to make sure your community and others across the nation are accurately funded and represented for the next decade.
The Census determines the number of Representatives each state has in Congress and possible redraws of district boundaries. Census data is used to distribute billions of dollars in Federal and State funding. Being counted brings those resources back to your community.
“Each person that gets left off the final tally will cost the county an estimated $2,000 annually in federal funding. If the final tally is off by 5 percent, staff estimates it will cost the county $1.1 billion over 10 years.” (2020 Census: $1B in Fed Funding at Stake for Contra Costa County, Patch)
