Latinx / Afro-Latinx / Xicanx month celebrates people who have shared heritage from Latin America and coincides with the independence days of many Latin American countries. This month is meant to celebrate the heritage of people whose families originally came from Central and South America, Mexico, as well as Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Originally entirely indigenous communities, the populations of this region have changed as a result of colonization from Spain and Portugal, and the related arrival of enslaved African people.
One of the ways we celebrated was Latinx Resistance, a day with music, lowriders, food, art, and good vibes. In partnership with Low Riders for Justice and the San Jose Library, RYSE staff hosted an on-campus exhibit highlighting oldies music, lowrider culture, banned books.
Members enjoyed the RYSE Village while eating esquites, Mexican street corn, and had the opportunity to ask questions to our guests from Lowriders for Justice, Frisco Lens and Chuy.
