Fall 2023 at RYSE

We launched the Fall season at RYSE with more workshops, activities, and events including OUR 8TH ANNUAL LA FERIA DE SEPTIEMBRE!! Many many appreciations to all who participated. This year’s theme was In La'K’ech: You Are My Other Me, based on the poem to the left by Luis Valdez. And appropriately so, his words emblematic of the togetherness RYSE fostered this past month as well as the start of Xicanx / (Afro) Latinx Heritage Month. You are my other me. If I do harm to you, I do harm to myself. If I love and respect you, I love and respect myself. Words of togetherness, of community. This sentiment expresses so well what this is all about, how we are all linked, and the commitment we must all have toward each other, in safe space. Scroll below to see how our Fall season kicked off!

La Feria de Septiembre

274 attendees!! Sending our deepest appreciations and gratitudes to everyone that planned, participated, and shared space at this year’s La Feria!! The performances were powerful, the music, the dancing, and the laughter were healing. It brought us so much delight to see folks try new things, especially the food: Garnachas, Tamales, Rellenitos, Atol de Elote, Pupusas, Black Beans and Poblano Rice, Vegan Conchas, Alfajores, and Aguas Frescas! The blend of Latinx/Afro-Latinx cultures from countries celebrating their independence starting on that day was an honor to hold and a joy to celebrate: Costa Rica 🇨🇷, El Salvador 🇸🇻, Guatemala 🇬🇹, Honduras 🇭🇳, Nicaragua 🇳🇮, Mexico 🇲🇽, Chile 🇨🇱, Belize 🇧🇿

Adolescent Brain Development Training

This past summer, Health Justice interns, Joanna and Karina, facilitated a Collective Training on Adolescent Brain Development! One of the key times for our constantly growing and changing brains to develop is during adolescence: a time for consolidating experiences & identity development, preparation for working with our peers in shaping and caring for the world, and is a golden age for courage, innovation & creativity. Simultaneously, trauma can affect how our brains develop during this time. The Collective Training on Adolescent Brain Development gave insight into this, how these changes influence behaviors, and how trauma- specifically trauma from COVID19- has affected a key developmental time.

The Kitchen Is Active!

On Munchie Mondays and Tasty Tuesdays, young people in the space continued to imagine and experiment with different ideas in the kitchen: from brownies to ramen, esquites (street corn), mac and cheese, candied yams, and salads, their creativity knew no bounds.

Our New Croc Charm Pop-Up Workshop!

We started the first day of the Croc Charm Pop-Up! Young people found colorful, funky ways to decorate their crocs.
