Celebrating Xicanx / (Afro) Latinx Heritage Month at RYSE!

FALL PROGRAM SEASON

On September 6th, we began our Fall Program Season! Current workshops include: Tasty Tuesdays cooking workshops, Organizing Club, RYSing Arts Club, and media/fashion pop-up workshops. And as always, all members have access to hangout spaces, our outdoor courtyard, games, free food, and an open music studio / jam room. We are incredibly excited to welcome back Richmond youth as they move through the 22-23 school year!

LA FERIA

La Feria is RYSE’s week-long Latinx Heritage celebration held every September in honor of Xicanx / (Afro) Latinx Heritage (September 15 - October 15). Spanish for "The Fair," the goal and spirit of La Feria at RYSE is to: share, learn, and bring knowledge around the Latinx identity, while eliminating anti-blackness; create solidarity through knowledge sharing to hold youth and staff accountable; allow for space and vulnerable spaces to exist around identity. This year’s La Feria had a Taco Tuesday taco-making workshop, button-making workshop, Lotería, and a field trip to the SF Mission Cultural District!

Field trip to the San Francisco Mission Cultural Center

12 young people attended the trip. We had an opportunity to learn more about our culture and history of how the center was created. We all also learned a few new dances, check out some lowriders, eat tacos and pupusas as well as a gallery walk thru the alley!

49ERS VISIT RYSE!

This month, RYSE was selected as a recipient of the San Francisco 49ers Social Justice Grant in support of our racial justice and restorative justice work. To formally kick off this new, amazing partnership, 49ers Players Azeez Al-Shaair, Spencer Burford, and Marcelino McCrary-Ball stopped by our campus to spend time with RYSE youth.

We are honored to be a recipient of the 49ers grant to address racial equity and restorative justice in our community. This partnership allows RYSE to expand our efforts across Contra Costa county to ensure all young people are treated with dignity and respect and that their voices are centered in the policies and practices that impact them.

RYSE Village/Clinic Groundbreaking

We have recently broken ground on our exciting next phase of our RYSE Commons Project – our onsite health and wellness center! Led by conversations with young people and healthcare providers in our community, this space will include:

  • Culturally Appropriate + Culturally-Rooted Services

  • Gender and Sexuality Affirming Services and Care

  • Sexual Health Services

  • Family Planning

  • Wound Care

  • Mental and Behavioral Health Care

  • Dental Care

  • Health Insurance + Health Care Navigation

  • Health Services for young people most vulnerable to systems harm and neglect

In planning for the design of our clinic, we had an amazing workshop with RYSE youth members who shared their thoughts and visions for the space. Everything from a tea bar, lush plants, comfy furniture, and relaxing music in the waiting room created a beautiful picture for what's to come.
