A Richmond resident, Tyler Hester grew up in the Bay Area and attended Stanford University. During college, he worked for the U.S. Department of Education and on then-Senator Obama’s education policy committee during the 2008 presidential campaign. Tyler went on to study education policy and politics at Cambridge University as a Gates Scholar. Convinced that educational inequity is the civil rights issue of our generation and inspired to make change for young people in California, Tyler joined Teach For America in 2008 in Southern California. After two years, and after being laid off due to budget cuts, Tyler moved to Richmond to continue in the classroom as a high school English teacher. He is now serving as the Senior Managing Director of Teach For America’s work in the Richmond area.
