Born and raised in Richmond, CA, 21-year-old Gemikia Henderson is one of RYSE’s up-and-coming video producers and directors. She started doing film in 2011 as a Media, Arts and Culture intern at the RYSE Center. As an intern, Gemikia took on a leadership role on the productions of youth-produced video projects such as the music video RYSE Up. She also assisted on the feature-length documentary Shine and assisted on a project for the Evergreen Lodge at Yosemite. She has also found some of her personal success by being the visionary behind the music video Street Literature, which was a youth response to the pain and frustration young people in Richmond experienced after the Zimmerman verdict in the Trayvon Martin case. During weekends Gemikia is active in her church and enjoys playing softball.
